'Black Panther' Official Full Trailer Breakdown: T'Challa is Wakanda's Greatest Fighter King

“Black Panther” is coming to us next year, and with all the trailers and teasers released, the new full-length trailer did not disappoint with new footage and a closer look at the world of Wakanda. Following his father’s death back in “Captain America: Civil War,” T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) is the new king and protector of the impressively advanced country. Meanwhile, Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) tries his best to dethrone T’Challa and seems to steal a Black Panther suit for himself too.
But before we get into the details, check out the 2-minute trailer below:

A breathtaking view of the nation of Wakanda

Black Panther Trailer 1
This is the first time we see more shots of Wakanda to be used in “Black Panther.” From the first trailer, it’s already established how beautifully-made the landscape of the hidden nation is. However, they’re not only hiding from the world, they are successfully staying away from world affairs by staying secluded in a bubble. A literal bubble! Basing on the aerial shot of the country, we see extensive scenes that proves just how advanced Wakanda is. We’re also treated to a glimpse at what its streets look like; and frankly, it’s kind of a cross between a futuristic Japanese city minus the cyberpunk themes a la “Blade Runner 2049.”

King T’Challa and the Black Panther’s spirit realm

Black Panther Trailer 2
As soon as T’Challa arrives back in his home country, we’ll definitely see him connect to his cultural roots and explore the grand scope of his responsibilities. And given how Wakanda is a mixture of magical and technological elements, it’s safe to say that his spiritual side will also be extensively shown. In the trailer, we see T’Challa in some kind of a dream-like spiritual realm as a number of Black Panthers surround a tree. In the comics, Black Panther communicates with Bast and Sekhmet, in order for him to make sense of his roles and responsibilities. It’s unclear how the Marvel Cinematic Universe would approach this element in the comic book material, but it’s nonetheless exciting. There aren’t many cultural and spiritual themes in the MCU, but this one from Black Panther is indeed a welcome addition to the ever-growing story of the franchise.

The new Black Panther suits

Black Panther Trailer 3
It’s established in the comics that Wakanda is a technologically-advanced nation, with T’Challa as one of the smartest people in the Marvel Comics. Although we haven’t seen it much in the MCU yet, we do know that Shuri (Letitia Wright) will be acting like a Tony Stark counterpart in the movie. In the first trailer, we saw a number of Shuri’s inventions, but here, there’s more focus on the Black Panther suits. They all look the same upon first look, but they actually have varying designs—especially the nano suit. These suits are generally made from vibranium steel (same steel as Captain America’s shield), and the nano suit still has it, albeit impressive upgrades. Apart from the silver lining found in the suit, there are also purple streaks that seem to hint that this is a tactical Black Panther costume.
Black Panther Trailer 4
We also catch a glimpse of Killmonger’s suit, which is very likely to be stolen from Shuri and upgraded with evil intentions. And though it’s basically the same Black Panther suit, there’s also a significant difference when it comes to its design and significance. Now come on, the gold lining echoes much of how T’Challa looked like in the comics, and so maybe the purple suit is a slightly higher model given how Killmonger steals the gold one anyway?

Black Panther goes head to head with Klaw and Killmonger

Although Killmonger is heavily featured in the trailer, Ulysses Klaue/Klaw (Andy Serkis) is the actual big bad of the movie. In the trailer, we finally see Klaw in action. There’s him sporting a robotic arm that acts as a sonic rifle as a car chase ensues between him and Black Panther. It’s an amazing display of action, as there’s a multitude of impressive effects partnered in every frame.
Black Panther Trailer 5
But in the end, Klaw might still get the upper hand, knowing how much of a threat Killmonger is with his stolen suit. There’s also a huge fight scene between T’Challa and Killmonger, and frankly, it’s a bit confusing upon first glance because you never know who’s who. It’s also worth noting the fight scene’s setting. It could be in some place in Wakanda, or it may also be another realm. But it’s also a beautiful shot that features the colorful cinematography that the movie will feature all throughout, and everything just excites fans even more.
“Black Panther” hits theaters February 16, 2018.
