'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' Season 6, Episode 12 'Casecation' Recap: Debate

Brooklyn Nine-Nine has a surprising amount of their personal lives intertwine with work. After dealing with a psycho-killer therapist, the Nine-Nine’s hottest couple neglect the days that they have. Before they could do anything about it, they find themselves stuck in a hospital, guarding a comatose felon.

On Thursday night’s episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) andĀ  Amy Santiago-Peralta (Melissa Fumero) spend their 1st Wedding Anniversary in the hospital. Inevitably, the couple spends their anniversary guarding a comatose criminal. While there, they have a debate on having children. After catching them off guard, Pam (Julia Sweeney), the patient’s neighbor, threatens to end the criminal’s life— along with her and Jake’s.

Michael Hitchcock (Dirk Blocker) and Norm Scully (Joel McKinnon-Miller) found their happy place: The Hospital. They enjoyed being around the hospital and liked the fact that the staff treats them nicely. Also, everyone who worked there knew Hitchcock and Scully, suggesting that they are frequenters of the hospital. Jake watches in disbelief as Scully happily prances around the hospital halls, on the way to his treatment.

Initially starting as a mini-date, Jake and Amy recount the things they went through during their first married year. Oddly, Pam, the patient next door, was listening in on them. Thanks to Pam, however, once they touch the topic of having kids, an argument starts. Amy decides to resolve the issue in the most logical way possible: a structured debate. With Captain Ray Holt (Andre Braugher) serving as the judge, Jake and Amy start the discussion. A string of other licensed debaters and emotional arguments later, they end up with nothing. Later, Terry Jeffords (Terry Crews) and Rosa Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz) arrive to break the ice.

Things happen fast as soon as Terry and Rosa arrive. The station received word that the comatose criminal’s rivals are out to finish him, so Captain Holt sent reinforcements in the event of an attempt to kill the criminal. Rosa and Amy quickly spot a suspicious-looking man, but he was a distraction; much like Terry’s story about his kids stealing cookies. The real culprit was Pam, standing on the criminal’s bedside with an IED. Thankfully, Jake and Amy’s debate did something for him as he uses this to negotiate with Pam. Eventually, Pam hands him the bomb and screams at him to get it defused.

The debate with Amy and the situation with Pam made Jake realize that it is okay to be afraid of being a father. Perhaps it is even a good thing in his case, with all the daddy issues he has. As soon as he gets to talk to Amy, he agrees to have kids with her. But not immediately, however, only when they think they are ready. As they left the hospital, the couple brainstorms on baby names and finds common ground.

‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Season 6, Episode 12 ‘Casecation’ Final Verdict

Much of the episode brings back the characters’ quirks: Charles Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio) and his cuisine, Jake’s Amy Sextape jokes, Hitchcock and Scully’s ridiculousness, and Captain Holt’s bookish, emotionless behavior. Also, focusing on one plot makes this episode different from the previous ones in the season. Hopefully, we get to see Jake and Amy’s child, (probably) Atlas Peralta, soon in the series.

Brooklyn Nine-NineĀ continues Thursday, April 18th with ‘The Bimbo’ at 9/8c on NBC.
