‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Season 6 Episode 5 ‘A Tale of Two Bandits’ Recap: Family Ties

Brooklyn Nine-Nine gave a fitting tribute as they said goodbye to one of their most cherished members. Now, a criminal previously thought to have turned from the criminal life reemerges. As this happens, the Fire Department declares Shaw’s Bar as their new hangout, but the Nine-Nine will not go down without a fight.

In this week’s episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg), Terry Jeffords (Terry Crews), and Doug Judy (Craig Robinson) team up to find and arrest the Pontiac Bandit’s copycat. After a long, tiring shift, the Nine-Nine heads to Shaw’s bar. However, their rivals, the Fire Department, decide to take Shaw’s Bar as their hangout. As a result, the Nine-Nine chooses to settle the dispute with a competition.

Strange Reunion

Terry receives word that someone who uses the Pontiac Bandit, Doug Judy’s M.O. is out stealing cars around New York. With that, he starts to think that Doug made his return to the life of crime. However, Jake insists on Doug’s innocence but agrees to go with Terry to locate Doug. As they made a call to Doug’s mom, she gives them shocking news: Doug is dead.

At the funeral, Jake and Terry meet Doug’s Aunt and his sister, Trudy Judy (Nicole Byer). Trudy thanks them for coming and retells Doug’s story about finding Jake or ‘Carl’ whom Doug took under his ‘Architect Firm’ to work on a project: a school for African American Astronauts. Choosing between retelling this story to Doug’s loved ones or letting Doug’s loved ones hear his ‘Angelic Voice,’ Jake sings a tribute to Doug when he suddenly sees him hiding behind an ornamental plant. Moments later, Jake and Terry confront Doug who faked his death because Stefano Lucas, a big shot criminal thought that Doug stole his car, so he is now after him.

The Judys

Doug agreed to go with them to find the copycat, but he had to D.J. in a bar mitzvah since that was his new job. While waiting for the bar mitzvah to finish, Terry receives a notification, telling them that the copycat is in their custody. To their surprise, the copycat is no other than Doug’s sister, Trudy, who decided to steal cars to pay off her student loans. Instead of going to prison, Trudy agrees to cooperate with them to capture Stefano Lucas in exchange for a lowered sentence. However, they needed to acquire Stefano’s car from Trudy’s buyer, Dallas (Adam Zastrow), which they did suspiciously easily.

As Doug assumes his Pontiac Bandit identity to lure Stefano, Terry, Jake, and Trudy hid in an unmarked van, directing the SWAT team’s next move. When Stefano shows up, the car explodes. Jake and Terry rush to the scene and find Doug there as the SWAT arrested Stefano. They realized that they missed one crucial thing: Trudy. Trudy wanted the life of stealing cars, and Doug could not do anything to stop her. With Dallas working for her, Trudy has all she needed to begin her life of crime so that the Nine-Nine will reencounter her soon.

Shaw’s Bar Takeover

Just like any typical day, the Nine-Nine heads to Shaw’s Bar right after their shift. Today, however, they are in for a surprise. Members of the Fire Department, led by Rob Dulubnik (Rob Riggle), sat on the Nine-Nine’s usual table. When they declare their claim on Shaw’s Bar as their new hangout, Charles Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio) comes up with a way to settle the dispute: whoever had the highest tab between NYPD and FDNY before closing time wins the hangout. With that, the drinking game begins. However, Captain Ray Holt (Andre Braugher) did not want to take part in it thinking that the Nine-Nine should hang out in a place other than Shaw’s Bar.

The fight did not go well for the Nine-Nine. Moments after Charles threw up, Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero) hurled as well. It was now up to Rosa Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz), Michael Hitchcock (Dirk Blocker) and Norm Scully’s (Joel McKinnon Miller) drinking capacity. Suddenly, Captain Holt arrived, compelled by one of Rosa’s voicemail sent to him. Captain Holt wins the game as he finished four bottles of ‘Charbonnay.’

‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Season 6, Episode 5 ‘A Tale of Two Bandits’ Final Verdict

The Nine-Nine brings back one of its most notable adversaries in the most unexpected way. As Doug’s role changes, a new character fills in his shoes. Also, seeing the rest of them take back their hangout from the FDNY was both amusing and touching as Captain Holt stands up for his officers once more. Now that they have their footing remains established, the Nine-Nine is ready to face whatever New York has to throw at them.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine continues Thursday, February 14th, with ‘The Crime Scene’ at 9/10c on NBC.
