Fox's The Gifted Won't Be Initially Related To X-Men Movies

“The Gifted” is Fox’s newest foray into the “X-Men” universe. It is a part of the same universe occupied by the current “X-Men” movies, but it won’t be connected to it just yet. The new superhero drama takes place in a world where mutants are acknowledged, but not really accepted by society.

“The Gifted” follows a family with mutant kids who’s on the run from being hunted down. The show teases big names such as the mutant Polaris, and fans are wondering when the crossover from the films to the TV show will happen.

The Gifted To Have Its Own Timeline

The shows and films in Fox’s own “X-Men” universe seems to be interconnected. However, this world that Fox has built around the “X-Men” premise is made up of a massive and different continuities. “Legion,” for example, takes place in its own timeline while belonging in the same shared universe with the films and TV shows. It hasn’t been in a crossover with any mutant from other timelines yet, and it is more likely that the show would stay the same for a while.

In an interview with eTalk, “The Gifted” star Stephen Moyer (Reed Strucker) will be doing what “Legion” did—at least for now. Moyer also revealed how the show will take on its first run and when it will fit in the vast “X-Men” continuity. Here is what he had to say:

“Within the X-Men Films, we’re sort of not allied to them or positioned within that. There are obviously mutant characters that have a place in the comic books. Some of them are different, some of them are sort of related in some way. But in terms of timeline, because obviously we just had Logan which was a lot further forward and obviously Legion which is a lot further back. So we definitely slot into a timeline, but as of yet, we’re not allied. I think they have given themselves a lot of leeway in order to be able to go places, but we’ve enough story within our universe to propel us forward without having to do that.”

Where The Gifted Fits In The X-Men Universe

It’s a good point of comparison for Moyer. “Logan” takes place in the future, a time where most of the mutants have been wiped out with only a few remaining. “Legion” took place in the past, where mutants are slowly beginning to appear, and are still not expertly understood.

And so it seems that “The Gifted” happens somewhere closer to the film timeline (with the next one being “X-Men: Dark Phoenix.) However, this comes as no surprise as most of the entries in the “X-Men” universe like “Logan,” “Legion,” and “Deadpool” have their own timeline in the “X-Men” continuity. With “The Gifted” initially having its own timeline, it can only mean more creative freedom for the producers given how it won’t need to fit in to anything just yet.

“The Gifted” premieres this fall on Fox. Watch the trailer below:
