‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 14 Premiere Recap, Review: Hunt Family Wins, DeLuca Siblings Bring Bad News

The two-hour premiere of ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 14 brings good, bad and tragic news. The good news is Meredith is doing well despite a recent shake-up in her dating life. The bad news is Owen Hunt is repeating the same mistake. The tragic news involves Amelia Shepherd.
Here’s a quick recap and review of the Sept. 28 episodes of Grey’s Anatomy Season 14. Warning: Read on only if you need major spoilers right now.
Episode 1 (“Break Down The House”) and Episode 2 (“Get Off On The Pain”) take the Hunt family and Amelia Shepherd for quite an ordeal. The Hunt family (including Teddy Altman) wins big after Meredith successfully repaired Megan’s digestive system. Megan even gets skin implant to close her massive abdominal wound and release her from pain.

Amelia takes on a difficult pain-related case and excludes herself from the Hunt family, earning their collective disapproval. She later meets Carina, Andrew DeLuca’s sister, who is conducting an in-depth study on how the female brain works during orgasm. After a successful surgery, Amelia participates in the study. She wants to celebrate the success of her surgery. But then she finds out something else in her brain.

Meredith Grey, Nathan Riggs and Megan Hunt

Megan Hunt returns from being presumed dead for a decade. She has a massive abdominal wound and wants to return to Iraq to be with her adoptive son ASAP. Meredith takes on a key role in fixing her. Megan learns of her history with Nathan and asks if she’s still in-love with Riggs. Mer says she’s had one great love and he’s dead. Later, Meredith walks in while Riggs is in the middle of re-proposing. Megan thinks Riggs is still in-love with Mer. So, she is returning to Iraq without her ex-fiancé.

Amelia Shepherd, Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman

Amelia and Owen welcome Megan back. However, Megan quickly notices they have a serious problem. Teddy returns to check on Hunt because she knew he would need support. She goes to as far as confronting Amelia for not giving Owen some support at this crucial time. Pissed, Amelia tells Owen he could have Teddy if he wants her. Later, Owen kisses Teddy. However, she reminds him that guilt over cheating would just ruin him. Fans of Sandra Oh’s Cristina Yang are reminded of Owen’s infidelity. Then, in the final scene of Season 14, Episode 2, Amelia learns she has brain tumor. Only the DeLuca siblings know at this point. Her reaction:

Alex Karev, Jo Wilson and Andrew DeLuca

Alex entrusts a major pediatric surgery in Jo’s hands. Then Jo totally friendzones DeLuca, telling him she is still in-love with Alex. She winds up sleeping with a sub-intern who nearly botched her surgery earlier in the day. Alex mocks her for it the next day, in the friendliest way possible. Mer advises Karev, telling him to let Jo know he hired a guy to find her husband. Ben, the new Stephanie in Jo’s life, knocks some sense into Karev’s head. He makes Karev understand that Jo is afraid he would also hurt her the way her husband did. Later, Karev follows Mer’s advice. Then just like that, Jolex are back together.

April Kepner, Jackson Avery and Maggie Pierce

Maggie tells Jackson what April told her in the thirteenth season finale of “Grey’s Anatomy.” Jackson appears unsure, even more confused than Maggie, about April’s theory. Later, April confesses that their casual sex in Montana hurts her. Also, she and their baby are leaving his apartment. Avery does not get to react. Japril fans have to wait until Episode 3 to hear his thoughts on April’s confession. For her part, it does not seem that Maggie would get hurt if Japril reconciles.
“Grey’s Anatomy” Season 14 is not about to look or feel lighter. There are already four love triangles in the premiere alone. Jo’s husband will show up soon enough. Arizona quickly gets over Minnick, thanks to Carina. However, there is no guarantee that all shall be well for Callie’s ex-wife surgeon. Meanwhile, Ben is talking about the rush he got from joining a firefighter’s mission, and actor Jason George is expected to join a spinoff series. This means drama for Bailey, too. So, if the two-hour premiere’s goal was to plant fear and anxiety in the minds of its fans, then, bravo. Mission accomplished.
“Break Down the House” was written by Krista Vernoff and directed by Debbie Allen, who also plays Catherine Avery. “Get off on the Pain” was written by Krista Vernoff and directed by Kevin McKidd, aka Owen Hunt.
Next week, Amelia tries to keep her secret. Also, Chelcie Ross returns as Harper Avery, Jackson’s grandfather. Grey 14×3 is titled “Go Big Or Go Home.”
