'Krypton' Season 1 Episode 2 'House Of El' Recap: Newborn Legacies [SPOILERS]

Everything’s just going downhill from this week’s episode of SyFy’s “Krypton.” The good thing is that we don’t have to wait for an entire season before we get to see some interesting character developments. It seems like Seg’s (Cameron Cuffe) generation is doing their utmost best to live up to their surnames. What makes it exciting is that we seem to know who’s on which side already. But, who knows? Superman is already a complicated individual himself. What more can a bunch of Kryptonians be?

The second episode “House of El” picks up right where the pilot episode left off. Adam Strange (Shaun Sipos) tries his utmost best to convince Seg to believe him. Throughout this whole episode, Adam’s consistent plea is “Trust me.” Sadly, Seg also answers him with multiple rejections. Dejectedly, Adam corrects Seg’s “Planet Detroit” to “Earth” and asks for a ride back to Kandor City.

Initiation of the Rankless

Adam unabashedly suggests Seg take advantage of his closeness with Daron-Vex (Elliot Cowan). He once again tries to plead his case and tries to make a deal with Seg. If Seg does indeed find a big, ugly, organic monster coming towards Krypton, he’ll have to help Adam. If not, Seg can go on and take his revenge to Daron. Instead of shaking or rejecting Adam’s hand, Seg points out Adam’s strange clothing again as he did in their first meeting. He instructs the Earthman to find Kem (Rasmus Hardiker) in the tavern and get a change of clothes before leaving.

After which, two Sagitarii pick Seg off the streets and forcibly delivers him to Nyssa (Wallis Day). Nyssa gives him a new set of clothes, highlighting the Vex sigil on it, and tells him to clean up quick. They have an appointment with Daron and the Voice of Rao.

In their meeting, Daron launches into a lecture about their god Rao and the biblical birth story of Krypton. Meanwhile, the Voice of Rao stalks around Seg, showing him the golden mask of many faces up close and personal. But surely, Seg has seen plenty of those in his life. After all, nobody needs a mask to be many faced. Daron drives his lecture to the betrayal of Seg’s parents. After Seg is forced to disclaim his parents subtly, Daron gives him a hearty pat on the arm and announces Seg’s vestiture ceremony schedule.

Truth Unfurling

In the Sagitarii headquarters, Lyta Zod (Georgina Campbell) arrives to find her unit preparing for what seems like a war. She finds out that it was primarily for a bloodbath of the rankless to clean out Black Zero, a terrorist organization, in the slums of Kandor. Lyta tries to search for a comrade to side with her in Dev-Em (Aaron Pierre) but finds him as heartless towards the rankless as their commander.

Lyta sees no other choice but to go directly to the primus, Jayna-Zod (Ann Ogbomo), her mother. But, Jayna does not see success in that plea either. Lyta’s concern for the rankless is turned against her by Jayna, who berates her into submission. To Jayna, Lyta’s strength could only keep her focused on staying alive and not much more.

Lyta was in for a little bit more of disappointments as she met Seg afterward. Despite him letting go of his anger towards her, Seg couldn’t forgive Lyta’s mother. Lyta understands. She speaks for them both to be true to themselves for them to know what next steps to take.

Seg Joins the Game of Krypton

Seg seeks out Daron to ask to bury his parents traditionally. But the chief magistrate refuses. He tries to reconcile by explaining the strife between their families and what happened with Seg’s grandfather, Val-El (Ian McElhinney). Daron tells Seg that he admired Val greatly. Then he surprises Seg when he mirrors the same things Adam said about a danger to Krypton.

As Daron mentions Val’s legacy, Seg changes tactic and tells Daron what he wants to hear. He uses Daron’s own words to win their argument. Seg asks Daron to let him continue Val’s legacy and serve Kandor through the science guild. Seg arrives later on in the tavern with a fancy science guild tablet in his hands.

Adam looks relieved to know that Seg finally has a chance to believe him. Seg pulls Kem into the loop, and before Adam could express his relief, Seg verbally hustles him to give him proof of Brainiac and the danger it was to Krypton. Seg gives Adam only two hours before he gives up and continues with his revenge.

Turnabout Fiasco

Lyta confronts Commander Quex-Ul, her superior, and challenges him to a Kandorian battle to the death over the command of their division. Primus Zod asks for an explanation from her daughter. Lyta divulges how she sees her own mother’s lack of confidence in her abilities as a warrior. She insists that Primus Zod will never have such faith, but it will not stop her. It momentarily stuns the Primus. In a rare display of motherly affection, Jayna solemnly wishes her daughter good graces.

As the seconds tick down the last of Adam’s two hours, he and Kem fail to find any evidence of Brainiac. Seg rushes out in anger despite Kem’s efforts to placate him. In a camaraderie that seems meant to be, Kem and Adam throw their lots with each other to save another all righteous hero from getting himself killed.

Nyssa interrupts Seg’s determined steps to Daron’s office. To his surprise, Nyssa gives him a shell containing his parents’ ashes. Nyssa tells Seg that everyone deserves a chance to say goodbye to their loved ones no matter the circumstances. After thanking her, Seg turns his strides to his former home.

Back in the tavern, Kem and Adam break their brains looking for clues. Finally, they find an anomaly in the atmospheric phenomena in the Outlands. There was a meteor shower where there wasn’t supposed to be in Krypton. However, for them to check it out, they have to go to the outlands which was illegal by the way. Kem suggests bribing and tagging along with the salvagers who prowl the outlands. Adam’s all game for it, but Kem isn’t exactly heavy with pennies. Kem starts eyeballing Adam’s Detroit hat.

As Lyta prepares for her fight, Dev takes a little of her time for some serious motivation. He tells her that she is not Sagitarii. She is the lighter of house Zod. She is a warrior and always has been.

A knock on the door pulls Seg out of his misery. He opens the door to find a woman and her child who wanted to pay their respects. Seg’s parents willingly took care of the child whenever the woman worked without asking for anything in return. As a symbol of their gratitude, the child hands over a stone carved with House El’s sigil. Seg sincerely thanks them both after he regains his composure.

House El Lives On In The Fortress of Solitude

Seg goes back to the fortress and stumbles upon an inscription on one of the sand covered surfaces. He figures out that his blood is the key and successfully opens up his grandfather’s greatest invention. It also gave life to his grandfather’s projection which Val-El programmed before he died for the sake of that very moment. Val-El guaranteed a mentor for his grandson.

Val reveals that he has created a way to travel into the interdimensional realm which lay beyond the space-time continuum. He calls it the “Phantom Zone.” Val catches his grandson’s frown at the name, but Seg quickly says that it’s a cool name. After seeing Brainiac in the “Phantom Zone,” Val says he rushed back out to Krypton and warned the council. But, it caused his untimely death instead. Seg determinedly promises that he will continue his grandfather’s work. Val happily accepts but tells Seg to do something about the House Vex situation.

Outside the tavern, Adam tries to bribe one of the salvagers with his watch. He tries to get off with it, but the salvager also demands the Detroit hat. Reluctantly, Adam lets it slip from his fingers and sadly watches as the salvager puts in on.

Meanwhile, Lyta keeps fighting ferociously for her life. With her face almost entirely covered in blood, she keeps standing back up from her falls. Just as she catches Commander Quex-Ul’s head between her arms, he screams mercy. In one swift movement, Lyta snaps his neck. After his body falls to the ground, Lyta repeats what her mother once told her, “we never ask for mercy.”

Choose Your Rank

Seg shows up an hour early to his vestiture ceremony to call it off. He firmly refuses to bear Daron’s house sigil. Before Daron speaks out against it, the Voice of Rao takes the opportunity away from him. The masked figure grants Seg the science guild sigil instead to wear. After Seg leaves, Daron demands an explanation. The Voice of Rao answers that it’s how to control the last remaining member of House El.

In Daron’s office, he and his daughter discuss the failure of giving Seg his parents’ ashes. However, Nyssa sees another opportunity as she reminds Daron that Seg trusts her now.

In the Sagitarii headquarters, Primus Zod proudly appoints Lyta as the commander of the 4th squad Sagitarii. However, she adds in a good deal of fair warning for Lyta’s new responsibilities before dismissing the newly christened commander.

The duo Kem and Adam nearly freeze their fingers off in the Outlands of Krypton in search of evidence. But, they successfully present a ball of black rock to Seg at the end of the day. No one has a name for the thing yet. Adam tells them that Brainiac sends it to his next target planets as a forward scout. To their horror, Adam takes back what he’s previously said. Brainiac isn’t coming. He’s already in Krypton.

“Krypton” continues next Wednesday, April 4th, with “The Rankless Initiative” at 10/9c on SyFy.
