'Lucifer' Season 3, Episode 19 'Orange Is The New Maze' Recap: Feelings Suck!

In this week’s episode of “Lucifer, titled “Orange is the New Maze,” Maze (Lesley-Ann Brandt) is sick of all the feelings and is laying down her final decision. She wants to go back home to hell. But, Lucifer (Tom Ellis) won’t allow it even when she wrecks havoc as the prime suspect in Chloe’s new case. The devil’s own emotions are being wrecked by the new ship in town, “Piercecker.” And he’s not letting himself lose anyone else. So the devil is embarking on a mission to bring justice for his demon. However, this might lead to more feelings that they never wanted.

Beach Cases

Lucifer enters Chloe’s (Lauren German) apartment to find Maze turning the place upside down in search of one of her knives. She fails to locate it, so Maze shoves a crate of her favorite coconut water into a bag instead. She faces Lucifer and flat-out demands to be taken back home to hell. Quite astonished, Lucifer refuses. He’s afraid that someone might get hurt if he takes another person on a “celestial uber ride” as he calls it. Chloe arrives and tries to talk to Maze about Trixie. In the last episode, the little girl was hurt by Maze’s outburst. But Maze abruptly refuses and leaves.
Pierce (Tom Welling) arrives next, and Lucifer suspiciously notes the open-toed Berkeys he was wearing. Pierce joyfully says that he and Chloe were at the beach. Chloe quickly and awkwardly adds “murder.” According to her, they were at the beach because of a beach murder. After Lucifer leaves, Pierce pacifies Chloe and tells her that he didn’t care who knew they were dating.

In Dr. Linda Martin’s (Rachael Harris) office, Charlotte (Tricia Helfer) tells her therapist about her encounter with Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside). Linda tries very hard not to let on that she knew the tall guy who she inconspicuously described as “bald in a sexy way.” Despite Linda telling her that the guy didn’t have her best interests at heart, Charlotte recognizes his honestly. She concludes that it was enough basis for her to dig deeper into his story.
Ironically, Chloe and Lucifer’s next case is a real beach murder. As Lucifer refers to Chloe’s alleged beach murder case, Chloe confesses that it was actually a cover-up for her date with Pierce. Ella (Aimee Garcia) awkwardly tries to save the situation’s dignity. To her success, she spies a surveillance camera pointing to the victim’s location. Chloe walks off to check it. Ella tries to comfort Lucifer though she is apparently gunning for “Piercecker.”
All three are stunned to see someone very familiar with the surveillance footage. There was Maze pulling out one of her knives from a man whose body was gaping with stabs.

Cuff Me, Says The Demon

In the precinct, Lucifer insists that Maze is a guilty woman. He thinks that Maze is manipulating him into taking her home. Pierce arrives, and Chloe doesn’t even try hard not to make her “Hello lieutenant” too sweet. When Pierce offers to accompany Chloe to the victim’s last place of employment, Lucifer drops his decision to go solo on finding Maze and steals his partner away.
On the road, Lucifer comically questions Chloe’s attraction to Pierce. He casually mentions that Pierce was much older than she thinks. Then he continues to insinuate that older men might leave Chloe unsatisfied. Embarrassed, Chloe tries her very best to cut the conversation.

Chloe and Lucifer meet Margo and Zack, the owner and manager of the winery where the victim Mike worked. The only thing they could tell them was that a pretty woman wearing leather was looking for Mike a few days before he was found dead. Chloe and Lucifer then went to take a look at Mike’s trailer where they found a can of green tea coconut water.
On the other side of town, Linda confronts Amenadiel about Charlotte (Tricia Helfer). Amenadiel insists that he owes her the truth. But, Linda reminds him of the consequences. She’s upset that Amenadiel went behind her back. Amenadiel pinpoints that it was all her decision to not tell Charlotte just like how she solely decided to end their relationship. However, Linda sets down her point as she asks who Amenadiel was genuinely doing it for, him or Charlotte.

Back in the precinct, Ella walks in on a little “Piercecker” moment where their hands were on top of each other. Dan (Kevin Alejandro) steps in next, immediately hit with a full wave of awkwardness. As soon as Lucifer walks in, Chloe gets up and offers her chair much to the chagrin of Pierce. Dan asks if anyone would be shocked if Maze did it. Everyone answers differently, but Maze clears it all up as she barges in and confesses. Chloe tries to postpone the arrest but Maze holds up the knife she pulled out from the body. Dan’s left with no choice but to cuff her.

Maze Wrecks Huggies

Chloe rushes to Pierce’s office to defend her roommate. But, Pierce directs the conversation towards her feelings for Lucifer. He feels that it’s getting in between their relationship. To drive his point home, he points to Chloe’s bullet necklace. Chloe quickly explains that Lucifer gave it as a joke gift. She later realizes that the explanation behind it was as awkward as it can get with the person she was dating. But, it successfully embarrasses Pierce enough that he tells her to find substantial evidence if she wants to exonerate Maze.
In the interrogation room, Maze unintentionally gives her innocence away. And both Chloe and Lucifer agree on it. Charlotte hears about it, and as Chloe gets the papers for her, she corners Lucifer. She told him about what Amenadiel told her and admitted that she feels adequately insane to believe it. Lucifer slips and accidentally calls her mom. But, as he tries to shimmy away, Charlotte commands him to tell the truth. As she grits our her words, she sounds like the goddess of creation which previously possessed her. Lucifer finally agrees and delves head-on into the whole celestial truth, wings and all. He leaves her stunned into silence.

Being the softie she is, Ella visits Maze at her prison cell. Suddenly, Maze asks for a hug and Ella is more than glad to give it. She then reports back to Chloe and Lucifer about the coconut water can. The only prints it had were Chloe’s. Both Chloe and Lucifer realize that Maze’s missing knife and the coconut water can point to a frame up. However, as Ella mentions the hug, both were more than surprised. They all come down to the archives to find a newbie guard unconscious and some files are missing. Ella becomes upset that her hugs were taken advantage off. Apparently, Maze’s sole aim was to sneak into the archives to get information about a man named Barry who sent her to hunt down Mike. Chloe explains everything to Pierce and convinces him of Maze’s innocence. Lucifer barges in just in time to stop a farewell kiss between the “Piercecker” couple.
Maze finds Barry and confronts him. But, she only manages to squeeze out “Sebastian Corps.” from him before someone shoots him in the head. The team finds the remains of Maze’s encounter and realizes that whoever tried to frame her must’ve been one of her previous bounties. But they found that instead of holding a grudge against her, Maze’s bounties appreciated her. They all tell the same story of being thankful to her. However, the last prize mentions the winery where Chloe and Lucifer went. Chloe immediately realizes that Margo and Zack were behind everything.
Behind the two way glass of the interrogation room, Pierce and Dan watch Chloe and Lucifer. Pierce concludes that Lucifer will always get in the way. Dan halfway agrees. He compares Lucifer and Chloe to a woman and her cat. Lucifer is the cat. If Pierce wants to keep the woman, he’ll have to keep the cat. Why? Because she’s worth it. However, Pierce’s mind runs differently. For him, he’ll get rid of the cat.

Consolation Prize

Maze finds Margo testing some wine. In their game of cat and mouse, Margo tells Maze that she was the mother of one of her previous bounties, Sebastian. Margo blames Maze for her son’s death in a prison riot. Chloe and Lucifer arrive just in time to stop Maze from sinking her knife into Margo.
Just like Lucifer, Maze thinks that she destroys everything in her path. Chloe tries to change her mind and reminds Maze that she was a good friend to her and Trixie. But, Maze is inconsolable. She nails Margo’s foot with the knife before walking out.

Afterward, Lucifer and Amenadiel face Charlotte together in Lux. They try to help things move forward for Charlotte by proving she’s not as crazy as she thinks. Lucifer stands back and lets his wings unfurl to their full glory. Soberness and disbelief rains down on Charlotte. Just as Amenadiel thinks they’ve broken her, she sighs. With tears welling up in her eyes, she confirms to herself that she’s not crazy.
The day ends, and Chloe approaches Pierce in the parking lot. In front of his eyes, she pockets Lucifer’s necklace. At the same time, she puts Lucifer farther to the side than he already was. Finally, the couple shares a kiss. They see Lucifer walking to his car, and Chloe insists on riding with Pierce. They drive away leaving behind a forlorn devil in the shadows.
Back in Lux, Maze walks in on Lucifer playing one of Beethoven’s more mournful numbers. Lucifer apologizes about his misgivings and pours her a glass of whiskey. But, Maze refuses to settle. She tells Lucifer how complicated everything is. She says to him, “Caring about humans always goes wrong. Feelings suck.” She grieves that she’s not the one supposed to be tortured but the opposite. Pitifully, she begs Lucifer to take her home.

Feeling pain himself, Lucifer once again refuses. He refuses to lose another person he cares about. As Lucifer tells Maze that they at least had each other, Maze realizes that she’s only going to be a consolation prize for him. Tears rush down Maze’s cheeks as she realizes that nobody ever puts her first, least of all the person who should. Before she storms out, she tells Lucifer that none of them deserves her.
As Maze waits to board a bus, Pierce comes up beside her. They both admit to their common dislike: each other. But, Pierce takes Maze’s attention when he proposes working together for the things they both want. And it seems that getting Maze on his side is only an inkling of the beginning of Pierce’s plan.
“Lucifer” continues next Monday, April 2nd, with “The Angel of San Bernardino” at 8/7c on FOX.
