'Siren' Season 2, Episode 2 'The Wolf at the Door' Recap: A New Home

Bristol Cove is home to a legacy of mermaid tales. As a town whose primary source of living is fishing, stories like those are not out of the ordinary. However, when a Siren makes contact with the local marine biologists, the tales become true. Still, it is hard to tell if the locals are ready to know the truth deeply rooted in the town’s heritage.

In this week’s episode of Siren, Ben Pownall (Alex Roe), Maddie Bishop (Fola Evans-Akingbola), and Ryn (Eline Powell) try to keep the new pack of mermaids hidden from the locals. However, the mermaids’ biology causes them to degrade quickly on land, so they had to return to the water. Meanwhile, Elaine Pownall (Sarah-Jane Redmond) grows suspicious of Helen Hawkins’ (Rena Owen) relationship with her family.

Undercover Intel Gatherer

Nicole Martinez (Natalee Linez) now has Xander McClure’s (Ian Verdun) trust. Somehow, the government knew that some of the town’s residents knew something about their mermaid project. Also, Xander’s father, Capt. Sean McClure’s death had a mysterious ring onto it since it happened the same night the Navy lost one of its cruiser’s entire crew. Nicole’s mission is to gain intel on anyone in town who knew something about the mystery. Presumably even help plan their next move on the mermaid project.

Nicole knew a multitude of things about Xander, but she could tell that he is lying about certain things. For instance, Xander still told her the lie he tells everyone about the manner of his father’s death. Only a handful of people within Xander’s group of friends knew the truth, and some moved out of town. Also, Xander’s encounter with Ben ended in a fist fight after Ben mentions that Capt. Sean’s killer, a merman, was among the group of mermaids who retreated to land. Xander did not tell Nicole about this, but Nicole is pretty sure that she will get him to break real soon.

Shady Family Past

Helen’s family has a shady past with the Pownalls. To keep her side of the family quiet, the Pownalls paid them a considerable sum of money, kept secure in a bank account. When the mermaids make their way to the town, Helen, being of mermaid descent, was the first person the sirens sensed, just as Ryn had. Tending to their needs required money, and Helen had the not-so brightest of all ideas: withdraw the Pownalls’ money.

While the money would undoubtedly be of considerable help to Helen and the mermaids, the Pownalls would not let her go that easily. After storming into Ted Pownall’s (David Cubitt) office and then acquiring the money, Elaine visits her shop. A casual interrogation-like conversation ensues, and Elaine manages to get what she came for: a cup of coffee with Helen’s DNA; the perfect material needed in a DNA test.

Unlike Ryn, the mermaids had a weaker tolerance for living life on land. As time progressed after their retreat from the sonic wave infested seas, their skin started to show signs of deterioration. Because of this, Ben, Maddie, Helen, and Ryn had no choice: they had to bring the mermaids out to see later that night. All would have been going well, were it not for the locals who came to the water for the Mermaid Festival. Despite Ben, Maddie, and Helen’s urging, the locals ignore them. However, Sheriff Dale Bishop’s (Dale Birmingham) intervention caused the crowd to disperse. Unfortunately, one of the humans dressed as a mermaid got hurt in the incident, so the police had to respond to the scene.

Sheriff Bishop’s presence helped alleviate the situation, and in no time, the mermaids got to rejuvenate in the waters and then leave peacefully. However, the mermaids’ problems were far from over. After an incident in a local convenience store, their rebellious member, Katrina (Aylya Marzolf)  decided to leave. Katrina has a fit of burning anger against Ryn ever since her defeat. The next morning, Katrina shows up with a dead wolf, challenging Ryn’s leadership once more.

‘Siren’ Season 2, Episode 2 ‘The Wolf at the Door’ Final Verdict

After an excellent first season, the show spices things up by making the conflicts more exciting. Unlike the previous season, this one seems to start with separate strings of problems. Seeing these different plots unfold adds substance to the show. Also, we are yet to see if the Navy decides to return to pick a fight against the mermaids once more.

Siren continues Thursday, February 7th with ‘Natural Order’ at 8/9c on Freeform.
