'Succession' Season 1, Episode 9 'Pre-Nuptial' Recap: Setting The Trap

When you become the second most important person in your wedding, you would snap. As the father suddenly decides to go after declining the previous invitation, the siblings have to deal with the backlash. Meanwhile, the Groom and his goon have a misunderstanding, despite the goon’s noble intentions. In the midst of the celebration, the fallen son plans his move to pave the way for his Succession.

In this week’s episode of Succession, Logan Roy (Brian Cox) decides to gatecrash Shiv Roy’s (Sarah Snook) wedding. Because of this, tensions spark between Logan and Presidential Candidate Gil Eavis (Eric Bogosian), Shiv’s boss. Elsewhere, Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong) prepares for his hostile takeover of the Waystar/Royco while Logan is far from home.

Having to deal with her mother, Lady Caroline Collingwood’s (Harriet Walter) disturbing behavior is horrible, but all this is nothing compared to Logan’s sudden decision to go. Since Logan is unsatisfied with the options he had as to what to say to the press, he decides to go. When Logan arrives, all of the guests look up to his helicopter. Also, Logan’s arrival sparked tension among a lot of people. In fact, Marcia and Shiv get into a fight themselves.

However, Shiv managed to prepare for the worst. With Tom’s (Matthew Macfayden) confession about the corporate cover-up he had to do, Shiv now has an advantage. In a discreet meeting, Shiv asks Gerri (J. Smith Cameron) to do something about Logan’s media. Logan always had them show stories that involve incriminating Gil for his wife’s suicide. Concerned about how all this would blow up, Gerri agrees to do something about it.

The Groom

Tom has his own set of problems. At first, they seem to be quite simple. While the persons he hired took care of his guest accommodation issues, he comes across something quite dangerous to his and Shiv’s marriage. Having never heard about her ex-boyfriend and now colleague, Nate Sofrelli (Ashley Zuckerman), Tom did not expect him to be at the wedding. When Shiv notices Tom talking to Nate, she ends her conversation with Tabitha, Roman Roy’s (Kieran Culkin) date and is also the same lady who performed fellatio on Tom during his Bachelor’s party.

After their confrontation about Nate, Tom decides to make a gesture of trust by telling Shiv the details of the Cruiseline cover-up. Shiv’s interest surprises tom, so he hesitates, but he ends up telling her everything he did. Later that evening, Greg Hirsch (Nicholas Braun) Sees Nate grope Shiv, so he decides to tell Tom about it. However, his good intentions ended up badly for him as Tom refused to believe him.

After disclosing a deal with Logan’s longtime enemy, Sandy Furness (Larry Pine), Kendall and his college drinking buddy/former business partner Stewy (Arian Moawed) plot their takeover despite being at Shiv’s prenup. With Sandy’s backing through Stewy’s investments on Waystar/Royco, the acquisition can be made possible. However, waiting for the right time to strike suddenly had to end. At the wedding, Kendall bumped into Frank (Peter Friedman) and Gerri talking. During this event, Kendall implied the actions he is about to take. Because of Frank’s loyalty to Logan and the fact that Gerri still works at Waystar/Royco, Kendall’s implications reached the higher ups.

While it seems like a spur of the moment decision, the trio needs to move fast. News about their plan could blow up quickly. As a result, their timetable moved. Now, Kendall, Stewy, and Sandy needed to catch Logan while he is far from making any action against him. It may sound risky, but at this point, they have nothing to lose. While Logan walks his daughter down the aisle, Kendall makes his way back to the top.

Succession continues on Sunday, August 5th, with ‘Nobody Is Ever Missing’ at 10/9c on HBO.
