'The Mick' Season 2, Episode 18 'The Car' Recap: Police Car Troubles and Fake Crushes [SPOILERS]

Tonight’s episode of FOX’s “The Mick,” titled “The Car” is one that highlights the importance of quick thinking—well, actually, it’s more like the ability to have common sense. It’s one thing that the Pemberton kids and Mickey’s (Kaitlin Olson) gang lack the most. In “The Car,” we see things blown out of crazy proportions. Jimmy (Scott MacArthur), being the stingy fella that he is, buys a used police car from a used car bazaar. Things seem great as they drive the car until they get locked out with Ben (Jack Stanton) inside. Meanwhile, Chip (Thomas Barbusca) pretends to be a black tattoo artist so he can get closer to Sabrina’s (Sofia Black-D’Elia) friend Holly (Ashlee Füss). When Alba (Carla Jimenez) finds out about it, she plays the two siblings for money (and a little bit of drama).

Everything wrong with social media

“The Car” opens with Mickey and the gang having breakfast. All the Pemberton kids are busy on their phones, and Mickey is shocked to see Ben now owning Sabrina’s old phone. Mickey grabs it and puts the phone inside a glass of water. Apparently, Mickey is an old soul, and she hates phones, computers, and the internet. However, Chip thinks that the internet is everything and he can’t wait to grow old hooked up to an IV drip and jacking it to VR porn. Alba tells them that there are many things to look forward to aside from the internet, like drama and the television.
Mickey suggests going out for genuine human interaction, but Chip thinks it’s a bad idea since it’s scorching outside. Sabrina, on the other hand, tells them that she’s meeting a guy she met online to get a tattoo. Mickey is shocked, and Chip tries to affirm what Mickey said about limiting your entire life in a computer—something he apparently misinterpreted. Then, Jimmy comes in to ask Mickey to go with him to a car bazaar. Mickey then takes Ben with them.

A not-so-fortunate bargain

Jimmy takes them to the bazaar, and he salivates at all the cheap vehicles for sale. Jimmy even put up his old beat-up car for $300. Then, Jimmy spots a police car for $900. Despite the bullet holes on it, Jimmy buys it. Later, They take the police car to a joyride in the middle of nowhere, with Ben riding in the back seat (which is, as police cars were always meant to be, very secure). Annoyed at Jimmy’s excitement, Mickey asks to switch driving. As soon as they get out, they lock themselves out, and Ben can’t even help them as he’s also locked inside.

When Ben asks if he’s in danger, Mickey tells him that they’re playing a game of cops and criminals where Ben is the perp who tried to burn down a building (remember the season 1 finale?). Mickey suggests smashing the windows, but Jimmy knows that the car is built like a tank, so there’s no way for them to break through it and free Ben. Jimmy then runs off to look for a coat hanger to unlock the door. As soon as Jimmy’s gone, Mickey picks up a large rock and throws it on the car. However, the rock bounces back to her face, causing her to bleed through her nose and mouth.
Later, Jimmy walks under the hot sun, dehydrated due to the heat. A guy named Gary (guest star Gary Kraus) stops to ask if Jimmy is okay. Gary drives an electric car, but Jimmy doesn’t see the appeal of riding with him, so he swats Gary off, only to collapse in a heap a few seconds after. Meanwhile, Mickey gives it her all to smash through the police car’s trunk with a stick, to no avail. Ben also asks Mickey if they can play another game because he’s bored. But for some reason, the impact of Mickey’s head banging on the car’s rear must have loosened the trunk’s lock, causing it to open. Mickey takes a wrench and tries to go in from the back seat. But another wave of bad luck happens when the trunk closes again, locking Mickey inside.

Then, Mickey hears a sound coming from inside; Ben says that it’s her phone, and it gave Mickey hope. She proceeds to bang the back seat so she could burst through. Mickey then wriggles through, but she can only go as far as her neck could go. Mickey asks Ben to pull her free, again to no avail. So Mickey tells Ben to fish out her phone from the front seat by using her bra strap and a stick.

Meanwhile, Jimmy wakes up in Gary’s electric car. He then tells Gary about his car problem, so Gary tells his GPS to go to the nearest hardware store. Jimmy is low-key impressed, and he asks Gary if he can floor it so they could get to the hardware store faster, to which Gary does. Back in the car, Ben tries hard to fish the phone out. However, it turns out that the end of the rod was wrapped in the handbrake, so when Ben pulls, the brake releases and sent the car backing up fast. They then end up in a lake. Luckily, Mickey’s phone got stuck on the grails, so she has Ben dial 911.

Alba plays Chip and Sabrina

Chip tries his best to make a good drawing of a hand in his room. Suddenly, Alba comes into his room to ask what he’s doing, to which Chip hurriedly hides the drawings. That’s when Alba finds out that Chip is pretending to be Marcus, Sabrina’s online tattoo guy as she takes the picture. At first, Alba thought Chip was catfishing Sabrina, but Chip only did it so he can get closer to Sabrina’s friend Holly. That’s when Alba demands $200 from Chip so she will keep it a secret from Sabrina.
Later, Alba goes to Sabrina to tell on Chip. But it turns out that Sabrina already knows that Chip is only pretending to be Marcus and that she’s just waiting to back Chip into a corner and confess. Alba, on the other hand, has a more exciting proposition about the situation, but Sabrina refuses. Alba guilt trips her, and Sabrina finally caves (paying $200 too). Alba then tells Sabrina about Chip’s plan to get closer to Holly. So Sabrina devises a plan to out Chip to Holly by calling her friend over. Alba then goes to Chip as soon as Alba arrives, so he panics, seeing how he doesn’t have a way to get Marcus to come.
Chip comes down and tries to impress Holly with his pretentiousness. Sabrina has none of it and almost tries to out Chip, but Alba encouraged her to let him get to the next base with Holly so Chip can go down hard. Later, someone rings their bell. As Chip goes to open it, he finds an attractive guy named Marcus (guest star Jordan Calloway) asking for Sabrina. But Alba told Chip she got Marcus so he won’t have to lie about where Marcus is. It’s also a way for Chip to prove that he’s the one for Holly. Sabrina, on the other hand, thinks that Chip hired Marcus. Then Alba tells Sabrina that it’s a good way for Holly and Marcus to get closer so Sabrina can be in control of Chip’s downfall. She then suggests Holly have a “private consultation” with Marcus in her room. Chip then breaks character and admits to lying about Marcus’ identity so that he can be closer to Holly. Then Sabrina tells Holly that she’s been trying to smoke Chip out ever since she found out. Shocked, Holly walks out and tells both Sabrina and Chip to stay away from her.

Revelations

Later, Chip tells Sabrina that it was Alba who hired the fake Marcus guy. The siblings also found out that Alba was playing them all along. In Alba’s defense, she’s only doing it because she wants more drama in her life after a boring day. Then, Mickey and Ben arrive soaking wet from being rescued. Chip laughs at Mickey’s clothes because she’s wearing a grocery box as a skirt. That night, Gary is annoyed at how Jimmy gapes in amazement with his car. When Jimmy asks the GPS system to play porn, Gary kicks him out and leaves. Jimmy then returns to where his police car broke down only to find that it’s gone.

‘The Mick: The Car’ Overall Verdict

“The Car” is probably the show’s dumbest episode, but in a good way. I admire the lack of common sense for all the characters. I mean, Mickey could’ve just used the wrench she found lying in the trunk to slowly break the glass down, and Jimmy could have asked for Gary for a ride back to their police car and some help in picking the lock. But the highlight of tonight’s “The Mick” episode is how Alba played the Pemberton siblings real good. In the end, the siblings got a taste of their own medicine.
“The Mick” continues next Tuesday, March 27th, with “The Dance” at 9:30 PM on FOX.
