'The Purge' Gets Fifth Sequel with Summer 2020 Release Date

It’s finally been announced that The Purge, the hit dystopian thriller will return for another sequel slated for summer of 2020 according to The Wrap. With the success of the first three previous films—The Purge, The Purge: Anarchy, and The Purge: Election Year—under franchise creator James DeMonaco, the writer-director is also said to have a hand in the sequel’s script as the fifth Purge movie seeks to have a remarkably cool ending for all its viewers.

First released in 2013, The Purge had a whopping gross of $89.33 million against a meager budget. The 2018 sequel directed by Gerard McMurray, titled The First Purge, starred Y’lan Noel, Lex Scott Davis, Joivan Wade, Steve Harris, Patch Darragh, and Muga. That entry also went on to become the highest-grossing film in the horror series, earning $137 million worldwide on a $13 million budget.

Crew Details on The Purge 5

Jason Blum, Man in a Tree duo DeMonaco and Sébastien K. Lemercier will partner with Platinum Dunes’ Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, and Andrew Form as producers for the upcoming sequel. The official title, cast slate, and director will be announced at a later date.

The Purge franchise also has its own TV series on the USA Network, based on the original movies directed by DeMonaco. Season one was announced in April of 2017 and stars Gabriel Chavarria, Hannah Emily Anderson, Jessica Garza, Lili Simmons, Amanda Warren, Colin Woodell, Lee Tergesen, and recurring actors William Baldwin, Reed Diamond, Fiona Dourif, Jessica Miesel, Paulina Galvez and Dominic Fumusa.

The Purge series was also renewed for a second season last November. With that being said, the fifth Purge film will surely be more gruesome and bloody as before—claiming more victims and committing more crimes as the annual 12-hour period for horror and mayhem returns.

Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions, and Platinum Dunes have slated The Purge 5 for a July 10, 2020 release date.
